AFTER THE LOSS TO SRI LANKA, INDIA CLOSES TO THE ASIA CUP EXIT

Up Tuesday, Sri Lanka put on an amazing run chase to defeat India by six wickets, sending their opponents home early from the Asia Cup.

Pakistan would eliminate India from contention if they defeated Afghanistan on Wednesday. Pakistan would then play Sri Lanka in the tournament's final on Sunday.

Sri Lanka's openers Pathum Nissanka (52) and Kusal Mendis (57) both produced half-centuries to position the squad for triumph as they pursued 174 in the Super Four encounter.

Sri Lanka was assisted in crossing the finish line by Bhanuka Rajapaksa and captain Dasun Shanaka, and two scrambling byes off the penultimate ball sealed the triumph. India responded with a string of wickets.

The hopes of tournament favourites India, who also lost their Super Four opener to Pakistan, are now hanging by a thread. Rajapaksa struck 25 runs without being out, while Shanaka made 33 runs without being out. Together, they put on an unbroken stand of 64 runs.

Even if Afghanistan supports India against Pakistan, Rohit Sharma's squad still needs to overcome the Afghans on Thursday to have any chance of moving on to the championship game.

After a cautious beginning, Nissanka pummelling Arshdeep Singh for two fours and a six in the fifth over, leading to a final score of 18.

Mendis joined in on the fun and made three fence-clearing runs, one of which came against Ravichandran Ashwin when he hit a magnificent ball over wide long-off.

Nissanka reached his fifty-run milestone in 33 balls, but Indian leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal broke the stand by striking twice in one over.

Mendis also reached fifty, however Danushka Gunathilaka was lost to Sri Lanka thanks to Ashwin's single.

After Chahal caught Mendis lbw, Sri Lanka was in trouble at 110-4 after 14 overs.

However, Rajapaksa and Shanaka's outstanding batting let them to escape that situation, needing just seven runs from the last over.

The game was won on an overthrow when wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant and bowler Arshdeep both failed in their run out attempts after Shanaka played and missed outside off stump with two needed from two balls.

Prior to Rohit's 72 off 41 pitches, left-arm quick Dilshan Madushanka recorded 3-24 in India's 173-8 victory.

After India lost two early wickets, including Virat Kohli for nought, Rohit put up 97 with Suryakumar Yadav (34).

After a protracted batting slump, Kohli regained his form with two consecutive half-centuries in the event. When Kohli turned around, the thin crowd of mostly Indian supporters fell silent.

Rohit responded by launching a barrage of boundaries, but his exit left Sri Lanka free to take advantage and take late wickets to keep the score low.

Each of Shanaka and Chamika Karunaratne took two wickets.
